At New Africa, we respect your privacy and your right to control your personal information. This page explains how you can request the deletion of some or all of your personal data without deleting your account.

We believe in giving users flexibility and transparency over their information.


1. Your Right to Request Data Deletion

Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable data protection laws (including POPIA in South Africa, GDPR where applicable, and other privacy regulations) to:

  • Request deletion of specific personal data
  • Request deletion of historical content
  • Request anonymisation of certain records
  • Limit processing of certain data
  • Withdraw consent for specific features

You may exercise these rights without closing your New Africa account.


2. What Data Can Be Deleted Without Deleting Your Account?

You may request deletion of:

A. Content You Created

  • Posts
  • Comments
  • Messages (subject to limitations)
  • Media uploads (photos, videos, documents)
  • Saved drafts

B. Profile Information

  • Bio
  • Profile photo
  • Cover photo
  • Website link
  • Location information
  • Optional demographic details

C. Activity History

  • Search history
  • Notification history
  • Device session history
  • Location history (if enabled)

D. Marketing & Communication Preferences

  • Email newsletters
  • Push notifications
  • SMS alerts (if applicable)

3. What Cannot Be Deleted Without Account Deletion?

For security, legal, and operational purposes, we may retain certain limited data even if you request partial deletion, including:

  • Username (while account remains active)
  • Account ID
  • Email address (required for login and security)
  • Records required for fraud prevention or legal compliance
  • Transaction history (if applicable)
  • Data necessary to protect other users’ rights

Where possible, retained data may be anonymised.


4. How to Submit a Partial Data Deletion Request

You can request deletion in one of the following ways:

Option 1: Through Your Account Settings

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Privacy & Data
  3. Click Manage My Data
  4. Choose the data categories you want deleted
  5. Submit your request

Option 2: Submit a Manual Request

Email: [Insert Support Email]
Subject Line: Partial Data Deletion Request

Include:

  • Your full name
  • Your username
  • The email linked to your account
  • A clear description of the data you want deleted

5. Processing Timeline

  • Requests are acknowledged within 7 days
  • Data is deleted within 30 days, unless legal retention applies
  • You will receive confirmation once the request is completed

If we cannot delete specific data, we will explain why.


6. Data Anonymisation Option

Instead of full deletion, you may request:

  • Replacement of your name with “Deleted User”
  • Removal of profile photo
  • Anonymisation of historical posts
  • Removal of metadata from content

This allows you to maintain your account while protecting your identity.


7. Impact of Partial Deletion

Please note:

  • Deleted data cannot be recovered
  • Deleted posts may still appear in cached versions temporarily
  • Messages deleted from your account may remain visible to other participants
  • Some system logs may remain for security purposes

8. Protecting Other Users

We will not delete data that:

  • Involves ongoing investigations
  • Is necessary to resolve disputes
  • Protects the rights of other users
  • Is required under law

9. Security Verification

To protect your account, we may require identity verification before processing your request. This may include:

  • Email verification
  • Two-factor authentication
  • Additional confirmation steps
